PVDF Lined Tank Supplier in India — Applications & Advantages

Why PVDF lined tanks are the material of choice for ultra-pure water, semiconductor and pharmaceutical applications — and how to source them in India.

Chemical processing facility with lined storage tanks

What Is PVDF?

PVDF — polyvinylidene fluoride — is a high-purity, semi-crystalline thermoplastic fluoropolymer. Unlike PTFE, which is fully fluorinated, PVDF contains alternating CH₂ and CF₂ groups in its polymer chain. This partial fluorination gives PVDF a unique combination of properties: excellent chemical resistance (though not as universal as PTFE), superior mechanical strength, good abrasion resistance, and the ability to be melt-processed into seamless linings.

In the context of industrial tanks, PVDF is used as a lining material bonded to the interior of carbon steel or stainless steel vessels. The result is a tank that combines the structural integrity of metal with the chemical resistance and purity characteristics of PVDF — at a price point that often falls between PP lined and PTFE lined options.

Unique Properties of PVDF

PVDF stands apart from other fluoropolymers and thermoplastics in several important ways:

  • Mechanical strength: PVDF has a tensile strength of 45–55 MPa, roughly twice that of PTFE. This makes it more resistant to mechanical damage, impact and abrasion during service and maintenance.
  • Low extractables: PVDF leaches virtually no contaminants into stored liquids, making it the material of choice for ultra-pure water (UPW) systems where ionic contamination must be measured in parts per trillion.
  • Flame resistance: PVDF has a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 44%, meaning it is inherently flame-retardant and self-extinguishing. It does not produce toxic halogen gases when exposed to flame.
  • UV resistance: Unlike many polymers, PVDF has excellent resistance to UV degradation, though this property is less relevant for tank linings.
  • Piezoelectric properties: PVDF exhibits piezoelectric behaviour, which while not relevant to tank applications, is a distinctive characteristic of this polymer family.
  • Weldability: PVDF can be readily welded using hot-air, hot-plate and socket fusion techniques, allowing the fabrication of seamless linings for complex vessel geometries.

PVDF vs. PTFE vs. PP — A Practical Comparison

Choosing between PVDF, PTFE and PP linings depends on the specific application requirements. Here is how they compare on the parameters that matter most for tank selection:

  • Chemical resistance: PTFE offers the broadest resistance, handling virtually all chemicals. PVDF resists most acids, halogens and oxidizers but is attacked by strong bases (caustic soda above 20% concentration), amines and some ketones. PP handles dilute acids and alkalis but fails with oxidizing acids and chlorinated solvents.
  • Temperature range: PTFE handles up to 260°C, PVDF up to 150°C, and PP up to 100°C.
  • Purity: PVDF has the lowest extractable levels, making it superior to PTFE for ultra-pure water applications. PTFE is excellent for purity but marginally higher in extractables than high-purity PVDF grades.
  • Mechanical durability: PVDF is significantly tougher and more abrasion-resistant than both PTFE and PP. PTFE is relatively soft and prone to cold flow under sustained loads.
  • Cost: PP is the least expensive, followed by PVDF, then PTFE. PFA is the most expensive option.
  • Permeation: PVDF and PFA have lower permeation rates than PTFE, which can be important for concentrated acid storage where vapour permeation through the lining can corrode the metal shell.

Temperature Resistance up to 150°C

PVDF maintains its mechanical integrity and chemical resistance at continuous service temperatures up to 150°C. This is adequate for the majority of chemical storage and processing applications. At temperatures approaching its upper limit, PVDF retains significantly more strength than PTFE does at the same temperature, thanks to its higher crystallinity and mechanical properties.

For applications involving thermal cycling, PVDF performs well due to its good fatigue resistance. However, rapid temperature swings exceeding 50°C should be evaluated carefully, as differential thermal expansion between the PVDF lining and the metal shell can cause delamination if the bonding system is not properly designed.

Chemical Compatibility

PVDF provides excellent resistance to:

  • Hydrochloric acid (all concentrations up to 150°C)
  • Sulfuric acid (up to 98% concentration at moderate temperatures)
  • Hydrofluoric acid (all concentrations — one of the few polymers that resists HF)
  • Nitric acid (all concentrations)
  • Chlorine gas and chlorine water
  • Bromine (liquid and vapour)
  • Sodium hypochlorite solutions
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Deionized and ultra-pure water

PVDF should not be used with:

  • Strong bases — sodium hydroxide above 20%, potassium hydroxide
  • Primary amines and ammonia at elevated temperatures
  • Certain ketones (acetone, MEK) and esters at elevated temperatures
  • Strong organic solvents such as DMF and DMSO

Always verify chemical compatibility with the lining manufacturer's resistance charts for the specific concentration and temperature of your process.

Applications of PVDF Lined Tanks

Ultra-Pure Water Systems

The semiconductor, solar cell and pharmaceutical industries require water with total organic carbon (TOC) below 1 ppb and resistivity of 18.2 megohm-cm. PVDF is the preferred material for UPW storage tanks, distribution piping and point-of-use equipment because it contributes virtually no ionic or organic contaminants to the water. A reliable PVDF lined tank supplier in India is essential for semiconductor and pharma companies setting up or expanding UPW systems.

Semiconductor Manufacturing

Beyond UPW, semiconductor fabs use PVDF lined tanks for storing and distributing aggressive process chemicals — hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrogen peroxide and various cleaning solutions. The combination of high purity and broad acid resistance makes PVDF the material of choice for wet-bench chemical delivery systems.

Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

Pharma plants use PVDF lined vessels for acid storage, WFI (water for injection) holding, and CIP (clean-in-place) chemical tanks. The low extractable profile and FDA-compliant grades of PVDF satisfy regulatory requirements for pharmaceutical applications.

Chemical Processing

Chemical plants handling halogen compounds, oxidizing acids and bleaching chemicals benefit from PVDF lined tanks. Applications include chlorine water storage, bromine handling, ferric chloride solution tanks and bleach storage in pulp and paper mills.

Power and Water Treatment

PVDF lined tanks are used in thermal and nuclear power plants for condensate polishing chemical storage, boiler feed water treatment chemical tanks, and demineralisation plant acid/alkali storage. Municipal water treatment plants use them for sodium hypochlorite and hydrofluosilicic acid storage.

Why PVDF Is Gaining Popularity in India

India's expanding pharmaceutical, semiconductor, solar and specialty chemical sectors are driving growing demand for PVDF lined equipment. Several factors contribute to this trend:

  • Semiconductor push: The Indian government's semiconductor manufacturing incentive scheme is attracting fab investments, each requiring extensive PVDF-lined chemical delivery infrastructure.
  • Pharma upgrades: Pharmaceutical companies upgrading to meet WHO and US FDA standards are replacing older SS and rubber-lined equipment with PVDF for superior purity performance.
  • Cost-performance balance: For many applications, PVDF delivers 90% of PTFE's chemical resistance at 60–70% of the cost, making it an attractive value proposition.
  • Growing awareness: As Indian engineering consultants and process engineers gain exposure to global best practices, PVDF is being specified more frequently in new project designs.

Selection Criteria for PVDF Lined Tanks

When evaluating a PVDF lined tank supplier in India, consider the following:

  • PVDF grade: Standard PVDF grades (such as Kynar 740) are suitable for general chemical service. High-purity grades (Kynar HP) are required for semiconductor and UPW applications. Ensure the supplier offers the correct grade for your application.
  • Lining thickness: Standard lining thickness ranges from 3 mm to 6 mm. Thicker linings offer longer service life but increase cost and reduce usable volume.
  • Bonded vs. loose lining: Bonded linings provide better heat transfer and resist vacuum conditions. Loose linings (with anti-vacuum provisions) are easier to reline and may be preferred where periodic relining is anticipated.
  • Weld quality: All lining welds should be spark-tested at minimum 10 kV/mm. Ask for spark test certificates and weld qualification records.
  • Nozzle detailing: Pay close attention to nozzle lining details — how the PTFE-to-PVDF transition is handled, how flanged connections are sealed, and how instrument penetrations are lined.
  • Documentation: Insist on material certificates (for both the metal shell and the PVDF lining), welding procedure qualification records, spark test reports, hydrostatic test certificates and a comprehensive GA drawing package.
